Ursula strengthens; Bacolod, 24 towns and cities in Negros Occidental now under signal number 1

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Tropical storm Ursula (international name: Phanfone) strengthens as it moves steadily west-northwest, with most of northern Negros Occidental as well as Bacolod under storm signal number 1.

The following are the cities in Negros Occidental under signal number 1:  Bacolod, Bago, Cadiz, Calatrava, Enrique B. Magalona, Escalante, La Carlota, La Castellana, Manapla, Moises Padilla, Binalbagan, Hinigaran, Isabela, Murcia, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Sagay, Salvador Benedicto, San Carlos, San Enrique, Silay, Talisay, Toboso, Valladolid and Victorias.

PAGASA weather bureau, as of their 5  p.m. Severe Weather Bulletin, reveals that Ursula gains strength, from maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h to 75 km/h.  The storm’s gustiness has also increased from its previous maximum strength of 80 km/h to 90 km/h.

Moderate to heavy rains will be felt over Dinagat Islands, Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands, Eastern Visayas, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and the northern portions of Cebu and Negros Occidental. Light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Bicol Region, Quezon, Marinduque and the rest of Visayas and Surigao del Norte.

Between Wednesday morning and late evening, meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains will be over Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and northern portion of Palawan including Cuyo and Calamian Islands. Light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over CALABARZON.

Residents in these areas are advised to take appropriate measures to reduce the potential impact of flooding and rain-induced landslides, especially in areas identified to be highly to very highly susceptible to these hazards.
