BACOLOD CITY – The Balay Silangan drug reformation center to be operated by the city government here will be opened in February.

Executive Assistant Samuel Montoyo, city anti-drug abuse program coordinator, said the construction of the P5 million Balay Silangan in Barangay Singcang-Airport is now 90 percent complete.

He said the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Western Visayas will conduct an orientation for the operation of Balay Silangan on 10 February.

The facility will accommodate drug offenders who will undergo a three-month reformation program turning them into self-sufficient and law-abiding members of the society.

“The drug pushers will benefit from this program. They will be evaluated by the City Health Office, PDEA and Bacolod City Police Office,” Montoyo added.

In June 2018, Bacolod was chosen as the pilot site for the implementation of the reformation program of the national government.

PDEA Director Aaron Aquino earlier said they have chosen Bacolod to be the pilot site for their program because it has been actively supporting the campaign of the government against illegal drugs.

Other Balay Silangan pilot sites are found in Cabanatuan City for Luzon, Caloocan City for National Capital Region, and Sarangani Province for Mindanao.
